Cold atmospheric plasma wound therapy
plasma care® is a portable, battery-powered medical device developed by Terraplasma Medical for the treatment of chronic and acute wounds, infected or colonized wounds, and inflammatory skin conditions. Using patented Surface Micro-Discharge (SMD) technology, the device generates cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) directly from the surrounding air—without the need for additional gases or consumables.
The therapy works through a dual mode of action:
- Pathogen inactivation – CAP effectively destroys bacteria, fungi, viruses (including multi-resistant organisms and herpes viruses), and disrupts biofilms.
- Cellular stimulation – CAP promotes angiogenesis, cell proliferation, pH normalization, and the release of growth factors, thereby accelerating wound closure and tissue regeneration.
plasma care® is safe, painless, and non-invasive, with no known side effects. It can be used even in patients with pacemakers or defibrillators and is easily integrated into standard wound care protocols.
What is cold atmospheric plasma?
Solid, liquid, gaseous – these are the generally known states of aggregation.
When ice and water are heated, they change their physical state: ice melts and water evaporates. Almost all matter changes its state of aggregation in a similar way if enough energy is added.
If additional energy is added to a gas, plasma is created. This process leads to ionization of the molecules.
Plasma is therefore an ionized gas.

- Technology: Surface Micro-Discharge (SMD) plasma source – no current through patient skin
- Plasma generation: from ambient air (no carrier gas)
- Treatment area: 13 cm² per sterile disposable spacer (up to 6 applications/session for larger wounds)
- Treatment duration: ~1 minute per application area
- Power supply: Battery-operated, ~100 treatments per full charge, inductive charging station
- Safety: No contraindications for pacemakers/defibrillators; minimal UV emission; <40°C local heating
- Consumables: Single-use sterile spacers with RFID for hygienic wound application
Indications
Wound Care
- Chronic wounds: diabetic foot ulcers, venous and arterial ulcers, pressure ulcers, pyoderma gangrenosum
- Acute wounds: burns, frostbite, abrasions, cuts, contusions, lacerations, bite wounds, amputations, surgical wounds healing by secondary intention
- Postoperative wound healing disorders and graft donor sites
- Colonized/infected wounds or wounds at high risk of infection
Dermatology
- Psoriasis, atopic eczema, rosacea
- Acne vulgaris
- Shingles, thrush, perioral dermatitis, ringworm
- Nail fungus and athlete’s foot
- Radiation dermatitis (supportive prevention and therapy)
Benefits of Cold Plasma Therapy
INACTIVATES pathogens effectively
- Broad-spectrum antimicrobial action against bacteria (including MRSA), fungi, viruses (e.g. influenza, corona, herpes).
- Breaks down biofilms, reducing recurrence risk and improving effectiveness of conventional wound care.
ACCELERATES wound healing
- Promotes angiogenesis, cell proliferation, and fibroblast activity.
- Normalizes wound pH, improving oxygen release (Bohr effect) and tissue oxygenation.
- Stimulates growth factors (e.g. IL-8, TGF-β1/2) for faster epithelialization.
SAFE, painless, and drug-free
- No systemic side effects or drug interactions.
- Can be used repeatedly over long periods without resistance development.
- Suitable for immunocompromised patients and those with pacemakers.
EASY integration into clinical practice
- Handheld, mobile, lightweight design for hospitals, outpatient clinics, and home care.
- Simple four-step use: place spacer, position device, press touch button, automatic timed treatment.
- Single-use sterile spacers prevent cross-contamination.
Clinical Evidence
- Pilot studies show up to 76% average wound area reduction within 28 days after just seven CAP treatments.
- Documented pain reduction after 3 treatments.
- Case studies demonstrate rapid healing in diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, surgical complications, psoriasis, acne, and rosacea.
- Supported by multiple RCTs and real-world evidence (Isbary et al., Stratmann et al., Hämmerle et al., Dejonckheere et al.).
Key Advantages for Healthcare Professionals
- Effective adjunct to standard wound care
- Can be delegated to nursing staff
- Reduces bacterial burden and inflammation without antibiotics
- Improves patient comfort and accelerates healing, lowering treatment costs
